Building a Band Means Business

While the instrumentalists and guard bring the music and rhythm to life, sponsors make the band possible. At an annual budget of $125,000, building a band is big bucks. Approximately a third of those funds come from business sponsorships.

“Sponsorships make a tremendous impact on the kids' experience,” said Valerie Heritage, Vice President of Fundraising for ILHS Band Boosters Club. She’s watched the Indian Land Warrior Band grow exponentially over the last four years. Her daughter, Sydney, is a senior and Band Captain. “I couldn’t have asked for something more that allows her to evolve as a leader… from friendships to teaching her life skills, it’s given her so much” she said. This is what the band has done for her teen and offers to all band students. 

A place to grow, a place to belong. 

The band program has indeed grown in size and accoldades. Last year, the Warrior Band participated in Regional Bands of America for the first time and placed in the top 20. They also revived the Winter Percussion program and landed first place in the state competition. This week the band will get the honor of playing at Bank of America stadium for the 2026 Keep Pounding High School Classic presented by Belk.

“The leaders these kids become are the future of this area,” she said. Local sponsors like Murdock Orthodontics are funding these future leaders through band sponsorships.

Sponsorships range in donation size starting at a minimum of $250, and every dollar counts. Last year, sponsorships covered the cost of a new gong. This year the baritones need more instruments. Other significant costs go to salaries for high caliber instructors for music and choreography. 

The donations make a difference for 140 kids – where else can you have that far of a reach.

Business sponsors also receive benefits for their generosity. Based on sponsorship level, businesses may receive free tickets to band events, recognition at football games, and private performances. All donations are tax-deductible as well.

“The joy the music brings is infectious,” said Heritage. “When you see them all together working hard and creating these challenging theatrical pieces, it’s deeply moving and can’t help but put a smile on your face.”
